Where to stay in Gloucester

Location and Safety tips for visitors.

Where ever you travel it is sensible to be aware of your surroundings. Gloucester is no different to other cities; there are lively spots and quiet spots. This advice is written to help you feel more at ease than in other cities where such advice is unavailable.

Image Coming

Gloucester is formed around a cross where streets from the North South East and West ‘gates’ meet. The gates to the city no longer exist except in name. The shops of the city centre run along and between these streets. The mix of architecture from Medieval, Tudor, Victorian, and other ages, is evidence of just how much history has passed before you.

The Cross           Eastgate St                       Westgate St        Southgate St
Bus and Railway Stations                               Northgate St and London Rd

The Cross

The area around the Cross down Northgate, Southgate, and the top end of Westgate and Eastgate is generally ‘very comfortable’ to walk through at night. These areas are pedestrianised and monitored by cctv, tourists returning from the Guildhall, the Cinema, and restaurants ( Bearlands, Topoly’s, Prezzo’s, Café Rene, Sebz, Hilltop, Dino’s, the Fountain etc) use these routes with ease.

Eastgate Street

The top end of Eastgate St with the Guildhall and shops is equally pleasant. The livelier end is at the bottom of the long Eastgate Street well away from the pedestrianised area. There are a number of bars, night clubs and fast food outlets at the bottom end of Eastgate St, which leads into Barton St and a number of multicultural shops and businesses. The nearest hotels for this area also have late bars and are lively, the Station Hotel and the New Inn, perfect for club goers and groups looking for nightlife. The nearest B&B’s are The Albert, the Lulworth and Centre Lodge. This area is definitely more suited for the younger generations at night time. The bttom end of the street is closed to traffic over the weekends at night when there is often a police presence.

Westgate Street

At the bottom end of Westgate St there are fast food outlets clubs and bars. Nickis B&B and the New Inn are the closest places to stay. This area can be quite lively on weekend nights .

Southgate Street

Southgate Street is long. The pedestrianised area finishes and leads comfortably on to the Spalite B&B and the docks. It leads to Gloucester Quays and Bristol Rd, the more industrial or commercial end of the city. The Travel Lodge overlooks a major road junction and commercial units as well as The Quays. The car park opposite the Travel lodge has warnings about car crime so take care with valuables. At night visitors should be wary of Gloucester Park opposite the Travel Lodge . Bristol Road has a number of fast food outlets and local pubs, one of which was forced to close recently. Tourists are not recommended to venture along here at night for a 'comfortable' late evening walk. From the travel lodge at night walk north up Southgate St or get a taxi.

Northgate Street and London Rd

From the Cross, Northgate St leads to the lively New Inn and then onto London Road. There are no late night clubs down this route. The Edward Hotel and Mulberry House B&B are along London Rd which is a comfortable walk along a residential street.

The Bus and Railway Stations

These stations are central so you can walk to the city shops easily. There is a taxi rank beside the bus station which is boisterous at weekend nights. The Station Hotel is convenient; it is on the corner of the junction between both stations. The closest B&B is Mulberry House a short walk along Bruton Way and up London Rd close to the Edward Hotel.
