Where to stay in Gloucester

Location Advice

A short walk to the city             A longer walk                 Outside Gloucester

Gloucester has a good selection of hotels and guest houses. Within a short walk of the city centre there is at present just one hotel that is a member of the 'Quality in Tourism' scheme, two that are not members, a travel lodge and a small selection of Guest Houses. There are a wider variety of hotels, lodges, and guest houses, a longer walk or taxi ride from the city centre. Larger hotels with leisure facilities and grounds are just a few miles outside Gloucester.

A short walk to the city centre;

The Edward Hotel is a short walk to Northgate St. . It is privately run and in a residential area with the hospital grounds to the rear. There is a ‘quiet’ bar and garden and a large, quite secluded, car park.  Photographs of most rooms are on their website. Good overall ratings and reviews.

The city centre has two ‘hotels’ that do not belong to the Quality in Tourism scheme; the Station Hotel and the New Inn which appears on some websites as a hotel. These are pubs with rooms, very central, perfectly good as a base for Gloucester’s nightlife, but not the quietest of locations, and limited parking. The New Inn is a beautiful Tudor building in the pedestrianised area, very central . Sizeable rooms open directly onto a balcony overlooking the old coaching courtyard where there is a restaurant, late bar and dance floor. The Station Hotel is cheaper, rooms reflect this. The bar which is lively and a good starting point for a night out with a group. Reviews and ratings are very mixed.

The Travel Lodge at the Quays, new, typical lodge style rooms, right on top of the new shopping outlet. Some of the surrounding location is a bit off putting especially at night but if you like lodge style accommodation there is no other choice in walking distance to the city centre.

B&B’s (Guest Accommodation) within walking distance of the centre are very similar in standard, friendly, homely, and a little cheaper than the hotels. The quietest would be Mulberry House along London Road, also City Lodge on Weston Rd. Nickis is more central and closer to the nightlife as is Centre Lodge. The Albert was reclassified from hotel to Guest Accommodation but still advertises as ‘hotel’ on websites, it is very close to the railway line. The Spalite also advertises as ‘hotel’ but is classified as Guest Accommodation; it is close to the outlet centre on a major traffic junction.

A longer walk or taxi ride from the city centre

The ring road around Gloucester has a number of travel lodge/inn style places; they all have parking and are convenient for the motorway. They are all a long walk into the center. In the outskirts are two 3 star hotels with good overall ratings. The Holiday Inn on the Barnwood Business Park is, however, fairly isolated from the city. The Ramada in Matson, great for wheelchair access and for functions, is close to the Ski centre but located in an area that is not comfortable to wander around at night. Another cheaper 'hotel' not in the 'Quality in Tourism' scheme is the Bristol 'Hotel' basically a sports pub with rooms.

Guest Houses in the outskirts have much better locations than the hotels. The Wharf House set back from the dual carriageway has a picturesque location next to the Severn and a reputable restaurant. Notley House and Longford Lodge are in good residential locations; Brookthorpe Lodge is more countryside and a pleasant setting.

Just a few miles outside Gloucester

Hatherley Manor, Bowden Hall, and Hatton Court, are well rated 3 star hotels a few miles from Gloucester in picturesque surroundings. They are popular for wedding functions dances and dining. There are many other Guest Houses and farms around Gloucester, popular ones include Cardynham House, Hope Orchard Brawn Farm and The Dark Barn, which is also good for functions.
